How to Love Mercury Retrograde

I am forever an optimist. If there’s a bright side, I’m going to see it. Heck, if there ISN’T a bright side, I’m going to create one.

I like it that way because optimism raises your vibration and helps with an abundance mindset.

Need help with that? Good, ‘cuz that’s what we’re gonna do with Mercury Retrograde.

Only, in this case, I’m not making up a bright side. There really IS a way to use Mercury Retrograde in your favor to clear up, clean up, get unstuck and move forward.

And when he helps you do all that, you will love Mercury Retrograde and look forward to his visits 3 or 4 times a year.

Just some background (in case you didn’t know)…

love mercury retrogradeThe term “retrograde” is used when a planet appears to be traveling backward. It doesn’t actually go backward. It just looks that way.

Think back to this: you’re driving down the road when a car going faster than you passes you. But, as he starts to pass you, he slows down and you pull ahead again. It’s one of those moments that makes your head spin a little and your belly go a little queasy because suddenly your perspective is off and it appears the other car has started going backward for a second (even though he isn’t).

That’s what happens when Mercury goes retrograde. He’s moving along and going faster than us, but then he comes to a curve in his orbit and it appears he slows down and starts going backward. He’s not actually going backward, it just looks that way.

BUT, when retrograde begins — when that weird change of perspective happens — the things that Mercury rules can start to go wonky (I believe that’s the scientific term for it).

Like… travel gets messed up, electronics don’t work right, miscommunications happen by the dozens, people don’t understand you and you don’t understand them, data goes bad or missing — stuff like that.

And that’s the stuff that people usually focus on during the 3-ish week period of Mercury Retrograde INSTEAD of changing their focus to what it’s good for.

I, being the eternal optimist that I am, want to help you change your focus and love Mercury Retrograde when you work with his strengths.

First things first

love mercury retrogradeFirst things first, there are some things you can do to make the tough parts of Mercury Retrograde a little less painful if he strikes:

  • Back up your data.
  • Get travel insurance.
  • Have printed confirmations and tickets for all travel plans — flights, rental cars, hotels, itineraries, contact info.
  • Give yourself extra time to get to the airport, to check in, to get through security, and get to your gate on time.
  • Have multiple ways for someone to get in touch with you while you travel.
  • Keep a copy of your passport with you if traveling overseas.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to get medications refilled before you run out.
  • Have some extra money with you in the form of travelers checks, multiple credit cards, and cash.
  • Send extra food for your animals while boarding them while you are traveling in case your return home is later than expected.
  • Love your electronics — no, I mean really send love and positive vibes to them.
  • Before responding when someone says something that makes you mad, inhale and exhale a deep breath and count to 10. Then give them a second chance to say what they really meant. Ask for clarification and don’t assume anything.
  • Be very clear in your communications with others.
  • Smile when talking to people. Even if they can’t see you, the energy of a smile carries through in your voice and will bring extra peace and ease to a situation (even a casual conversation).

None of this has to be done in a spirit of fear or anxiety. These are all merely suggestions to work with the energy of Mercury Retrograde in a positive way and help keep life going smoothly.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the fun stuff so that you can really learn to love Mercury Retrograde.

How to love Mercury Retrograde

There are other meanings of retrograde and these are the things that we need to focus on during retrograde periods.

love mercury retrogradeWhen a planet goes retrograde and it appears to travel backward, think of it as the time when you should also go backward — retreat and rest, take a few steps back to see a bigger picture, go back into the past to tie up loose ends and get closure on open loops.

When a planet is barreling forward, it’s a pushing energy that’s very masculine in nature, where retrograde motion is a more feminine, pulling energy. Think of the Sirens and how they lure you in, they pull you in, in a magnetic way. That’s what retrograde energy is doing as well. It’s when you resist this “going backward” energy that you experience problems.

Remember I said that retrograde motion also changes your perspective (think of the examples of the cars and how things suddenly look different than they actually are). When a planet is retrograde, you are getting to see a different perspective. It might not look quite right so it’s beneficial to let yourself really look at that new perspective to bring it into clear focus and understanding.

love mercury retrogradeIt’s almost like you’re getting to see under the surface, behind the curtain, beyond the veil into the mysterious. This is like going into the subconscious mind and bringing it to the surface, to the conscious mind, to evaluate and work with it. And it’s your subconscious mind and beliefs that have such powerful effects over your behaviors, attitudes, personality, actions, and dreams.

Also, when a planet goes retrograde, we can sometimes feel out of sorts and ungrounded, but that’s because we’ve been in that masculine, forward-motion, pushing energy for so long that the shift into the magnetic feminine energy can throw us off balance.

Retrograde is one of the ways in which the Universe provides us with the opportunity to get back into alignment with ourselves and find our balance.

So a retrograding planet has the potential to help you work with your subconscious mind in a very deep way and shift back into alignment, and Mercury is no exception.

So… how exactly do we work with Mercury when it’s in retrograde to access the subconscious and get back into alignment?

love mercury retrogradeWe go back. We go in. We clear up the past. We shine a light on our shadows. We close old loops.

We look at what Mercury rules and we go back to work with those issues in our lives that were never completed.

Mercury is the messenger and rules communication. What messages in your life need to be acknowledged and addressed? What do you need to express? How do you communicate?

STEP 1. Create a sacred space for yourself with a candle, incense, crystals, (or whatever creates sacred space for you) and your journal. Give yourself permission to open up the past and allow those things that are ready to be healed, expressed, or completed to arise within your memory.

STEP 2. Close your eyes and take a few deep, calming breaths.

STEP 3. Ask for those things to come to mind that never got proper closure or completion. This could be:

  • relationships that didn’t end well
  • fights or arguments that never got cleared up but pushed under the rug instead
  • things that you have “settled” for instead of asking for what you really wanted
  • business that fell through
  • started and abandoned crafts or projects
  • old to do lists
  • draft emails you never finished
  • broken items you intended to fix but didn’t
  • things you wanted to say but never did
  • wrongs that you want to right (either done to you or things you’ve done to others)
  • hurts that never got healed (again, to you or by you)
  • and… any clutter in your space (how does clutter always play into healing work??)

STEP 4. Write down anything that comes up on this free worksheet I made for you.

STEP 5. Once you’re done writing your list, read through it and feel the sensations in your body as you read each one. Are there some that feel more important to clear up than others? Do any of them give you a twinge of guilt, sadness, or annoyance? Do any of them jump out at you as ready to be completed? Which ones are the easiest to clear up?

STEP 6. Based on the questions above, circle the top 3 (you can always go back and do more, but start with less so you aren’t overwhelmed).

STEP 7. Then, pick one and start clearing it up.

How do you clear it up? Depends on what it is.

If it’s clutter, unfinished crafts or projects, broken items, old to do lists, draft emails, or the like, you can do 1 of 2 things: (1) finish it (meaning, complete the project or fix the broken thing), or (2) give yourself permission to declare it completed as-is, say thank you to it, cut your cords of attachment to it, and get rid of it.

Get rid of things COMPLETELY — donate them, throw them away, recycle them — whatever, just get them out of your house and your possession.

If it’s relationships, arguments, settling, business, things left unsaid, wrongs, hurts, or the like, you can do 1 of 2 things: (1) go back to the other person, have a conversation, speak your truth (in a loving way), and reconcile the situation, or (2) write a letter to the other person involved and ask for the message in the letter to be delivered from your Spirit to the other person’s Spirit (you don’t have to actually send it). Speak your truth in the letter, say your peace, apologize or accept an apology (whatever needs to happen). Give yourself permission to  cut any cords of attachment to this past situation and accept this act of energetic completion as true and absolute.

Actually, you can do any sort of ritual (other than writing a letter) that symbolizes completion, healing, and closure for you.

STEP 8. Once completed, take a few deep, cleansing breaths and let yourself feel the new clear space you’ve created in your energy fields. Express your gratitude for the completion and new space, then go back up and do steps 7 & 8 again for each item you want to clear.

Now THIS is what we should all be looking forward to when Mercury Retrograde comes around because we could all use energetic freedom and clear space in our lives to help us feel free, light, and open.
